Tides of Emotion…

The last week has been more than a little hectic…

I have been swamped at times by tides of emotion that have had me upbeat one moment and down the next…!!

I have been trying to deal with the fact that my long journey around the world is almost at an end and that a new and exciting journey with Patricia is about to begin… Those two things coming at the same time have been difficult to handle… Planning and executing a wedding is far more difficult than riding a bike around the world, this I can tell you…!!

There is also the thought that in a few days time I will be back in South Africa to see my family and friends who I last saw more than 32 months ago… With the arrival of each new day, I realise how much I have missed them and how much they mean to me…

The recent death of my dog Jessie, who I was also looking forward to seeing again, has not helped matters…

The hundred and one things that we have had to make last-minute arrangements for to keep our wedding plans on track, have kept us more than a little busy, and without the huge efforts of Patricia’s family, I have no idea how we would have coped…!! A big thanks to all, especially Karen who has done so much for us over the past week…

I have been able to make a few rides recently, which gave me a chance to “restore the balance” so to speak… These rides re-inforced the fact that being on the Big Fella always gives me the opportunity to put things into perspective, while simultaneously experiencing the thrill of zipping along with the wind in my face on a machine that has become such a big part of me…

I have taken a ride to Pennsylvania to meet up with Doug, who has followed my journey since 2010, and the past two days have brought back a little sanity…!! Yesterday, Doug rode all the way from central Pennsylvania to the Atlantic Ocean with me, which put the cap on my ride across North America…

Although I had arrived in Freehold over a week ago, I had not taken the bike to the coast to complete my Pacific to Atlantic run… As we stood on the beach at  Sandy Hook, on the very spot where Patricia and I will marry tomorrow, I realised that the last time I had seen the Atlantic Ocean proper, was in Rio de Janeiro, a very long way to the south…!!

Not being able to keep up with my writing has also been stressful… I know now without a doubt that I am only able to do this in isolation, along with a few very important “props”, such as a large bottle of water or Gatorade; a deep ashtray; and a selection of chocolate bars close at hand…!!

Without the above, I can’t seem to get my mind into gear, and hence the long gaps between my recent posts…

Today we have a dozen or so last-minute things to do to ensure that tomorrow goes as smoothly as possible and then all that will be left, is to stand and watch Patricia walk towards me on the beach at Sandy Hook…

I guess you’ll be wanting to see a few photos of THAT particular event…!! There will probably be a few up on various “Facebooks” long before I am able to get even one up on my website…!!

Right now I have to pack up and start another day of stress management…
