Hanging in California with WorldRider…

When I last saw Allan Karl, on the 13th of February 2008, he was bundled into a taxi, on his way to the airport in Dar-es-Salaam, bound for the Spice island of Zanzibar… I was commencing the 6000 km journey back to South Africa, through Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Swaziland….

My parting words to him were, “I WILL see you again, my friend…!”

And now, almost a year later, give or take a few days, I am here in Carlsbad, California, enjoying copious amounts of fine wine with the very same Worldrider !!!!

My reasons for visiting him are varied, and in no order of importance, as follows:

  • I had made a promise which I fully intended to honour;
  • I wanted to determine if the bond we shared as we rode through several countries together, was still there;
  • I needed his invaluable assistance with the planning of my own “Round the World” trip;
  • And most of all, I had missed this crazy American, who had been a great traveling companion, at a time when I needed to take my mind off the various hassles which had set me off on my trip from Johannesburg to Dar-es-Salaam and back, on a round-about route, which took me through 10 African countries and covered almost 17 000 kms.

It has already been well worth flying halfway around the world to re-unite with Allan, the short time we have spent together, has been as wacky as our trip through Southern Africa exactly a year ago…

And now, with only a few days to go before I begin my return journey, I wish that we could have spent more time together, shooting the breeze, while reminiscing about our previous trip together, and working our way through our collections of maps, covering this amazing planet we live on, planning my own trip around the world, which I hope to set out on in 2011…

More on this in the near future. I will spend the next few months outlining my plans, my intended route, and the reasoning behind my desire to emulate the kind of journey my good friend Allan Karl undertook in July 2005….

We’ve spent the last few days taking in the sights and sounds of Southern California, walking along the beach, visiting the beautiful gardens of the …… , buying cd’s at Lou’s, a famous record store in Encinitas, searching for the best Hot Dog’s in California and coming up empty-handed but nevertheless getting to have a great tasting plate of chicken wings at Wing Shot on El Camino Real in Carlsbad…..

You can’t be in California without getting involved in the movie business, right ?? With this in mind, Allan has been filming our progress through the streets and stores of the area, giving a running commentary of the sights and sounds around us, attracting the attention of passersby as we go… Yeah, he hasn’t changed a bit….not that I had expected him to have !!

On our way down to San Diego, we had a little run in with the law…. Something about an improperly licensed vehicle and windows that were tinted too dark… Allan tried to explain that celebrities needed their privacy, but the Officer was having none of it !! The end result was a “fix-it” ticket, which would have had a South African driver laughing fit to burst !!! The ticket would have been blowing in the wind within a few hundred metres of the scene, once the officer had departed ! But this is California, and one needs to to be bit circumspect when dealing with the law, especially when you have a plane to catch in a few days time !!!

Once the formalities had been taken care of, Allan came back into his own, and the result was a photo session with me in the back of the Cruiser, with a bemused officer looking on…. Only Allan would pull a stunt like this….

As I’ve said before, in many a post on this site, with Allan Karl in the vicinity, expect the unexpected….every time !!! I’ll say one thing for him, and that is he is the perfect model of consistency !!!
