Tooling Up…

A number of folk have posed the question, “What if you break down in the middle of nowhere?” . This is a paranoia inducing question at the best of times, and in my case it has been no different !! I have had endless discussions with a multitude of “guys that know about these things”, and began compiling a list of the items that I might need in the event of minor breakdowns… After covering two pages with a list of these “vital bits and pieces” I quickly realised that I would need to tow a trailer behind the bike if I took heed of all the well-meaning advice that I was given !

I finally settled on a short version of a  “short-list”, and used the two BMW toolkit holders I had, as well as a little socket set holder to put them all in… I then decided to consolidate all the items into one toolkit, and using the Touratech design as a template, visited a “hole-in-the-wall” upholsterer who rents a tiny shop in a non-descript shopping centre close to where I currently live, to make up my toolkit…

The end result is a fairly compact kit that will hopefully not be used too often during the course of my Journey… Touch wood !!

My new kit with the tools I will hopefully never need !!

You fold it in half, like so.....

And then you roll the whole thing up, like so...

Thanks to Caiphus, I now have a compact tool kit that holds all the stuff I finally settled on… For more serious breakdowns, I will have to get the bike to the nearest mechanic, then get the guys at DHL grinning from ear to ear…..!!! I have also finally decided on a short list of spares that I will carry with me, and will list them in a future posting, for those of you who are planning to undertake long distance trips of your own…. Get it on, Dudes !! Take the plunge !!
